Renold Gears, a business of Renold Power Transmission, launches a
breakthrough in gear design with its 'new generation' shaft mounted helical gear
units.
Designated the SMXtra, the new series features higher power ratings averaging
an impressive 35 per cent over previous models, while optimised design features
have permitted original frame sizes and overall dimensions to remain the same.
Allied to the increased power capacity, customer-focused upgrades ensure the
gear units are more environmentally friendly and even easier to fit and
configure than ever before.
A number of enhanced seal options are available to fit all standard units,
which can be installed so as to optimise protection from dust and moisture.
Alternatively, by reversing one element of the standard design, the seal can
provide additional security to prevent the egress of oil into sensitive
environments - extremely useful for applications involving food production.
Both parallel bore and single taper bush mountings are available. The
improved single taper bush, arguably the best taper mounting device on the
market, allows for easy removal even after service in the most arduous
environment - while a new double taper hub permits fitment of the bush from
either side of the gear unit.
For even more convenience, an improved motor mounting platform is featured,
which permits side mounting as well as conventional top mounting, and is
supplied with a drilling template to suit all matching motor sizes.
Another new feature is the incorporation of a new, compact torque restraint,
as an alternative to a conventional torque arm where space limitations apply.

The SMXtra series is available as single or double reduction units and offers
gear ratios of up to 25:1 with a power capacity range from 0.3kW to 173kW. Each
unit is fitted with high tolerance heavy-duty roller bearings for trouble free
running and maximum load carrying capacity.
Applications for the
SMXtra are both diverse and comprehensive including conveyor drives, mixer
drives, the packaging industry, food process machinery, printing, textiles,
materials handling and general industry usage.
The SMXtra comes complete with a CD ROM containing a wealth of information on
product selection, installation and maintenance. A catalogue 'PDF' file is also
included on the CD.
Complementing its SMXtra shaft mounted helical gear units, Renold Gears
manufactures a diverse range of in-line, right angle and variable speed gear
products to meet the demands of industry worldwide. The company is also a single
source for a comprehensive range of products and services including: gear
manufacture, engineered solutions, service and repair.
