This 1,100 metre long conveyor system moves 350 tons of aggregate every hour from the quarry to a port where it is loaded onto ships for export. The blue drive unit, seen in the picture, is manufactured by Renold Gears and has to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week in a hostile environment exposed to dust, grit and extreme weather conditions.

To meet the challenge Renold Gears designed a solution incorporating a PM series helical/bevel/helical gear unit driven by a 55kw AC motor through a Renold Hydrastart soft-start fluid coupling. Fitted to the output shaft of the drive package is a Renold Pinflex coupling, which provides the connection to the head shaft of the conveyor.
