Mining

In the mining industry the need is for rugged reliable gearing, and worm gearing is used for various drives from special coal cutting machines to axle drives for tunnelling locomotives.

Civil Engineering and Building

Worms and wheels sets are used in the building industry on cranes, trucks, dumpers and mechanical shovels, for drives to steering mechanisms and rear axles.

Steel and Foundry Plant

Some of the largest wormgear sets are used on screw down mechanisms on automated steel strip mills.  The demand for reliability and strength in the steel industry has lead to the use of worm gears on other machines for example in metal shearing and includes wire and tube drawing machines, in which wormgears are widely used with ratios usually varying from 2.5 to 30/1.

Automobile

Wormgears are used on fuel injection and oil pump drives for diesel engines, as well as the axle drives on passenger buses.

Power

The most common uses of made to order gears in the power industry are the governor and barring gear drives on steam turbines.
